Start off with drawing all the outlines with an HB pencil. Try to make them as light as possible.
Lightly shade the skin with a tan colour pencil, leaving lightest areas on cheeks, nose, forehead very light.
Start building up shading with a peach colour pencil, still going pretty light.
Keep building up shading with coral and light brown pencils. If you want the drawing to appear smoother, you can blend the colours with a cotton bud.
At the stage where skin is almost finished I usually begin working on eyes and lips.
Finish the skin and features with darker browns, then start working on hair - lightest shade first.
Add light brown and amber strands to the main hair colour.
Finish the hair with dark brown and black pencils.
This is my Portrait Tutorial, which I hope will give you some useful tips. I've drawn this tutorial using Crayola colour pencils. Altough I mainly use Crayola colour pencils, I've tried mixing with other brands such as Faber Castell, Lyra, Derwent, Prismacolor - they blend really well with Croyola. Play around with different brands and see what works best for you.
For colour pencil drawings I prefer textured paper, such as, Canson, Cotman, DAS - usually between 170GSM and 190GSM. You can try coloured paper for an intresting effect. Canson do a wide range of pastel coloured paper, which are great.
